John Proctor, a Caption of Humanity
"All great things must first wear terrifying and monstrous masks in order to inscribe themselves on the hearts of humanity."(Fredrich Nietzsche). Inspired by the McCarthy hearings of the nineteen-fifties, “The Crucible”, was written by Arthur Miller, and published in nineteen-fifty three. Miller, being charged like many others, was accused of being a communist by Joseph McCarthy. In response to McCarthy’s false accusations, Miller wrote “The Crucible” metaphorically linking to “The Red Scare” to the Salem witch trials of 1692. The tragic writings of . The Crucible, focuses on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the extreme behavior that can result from dark desires and hidden agendas. In comparison to “ The Crucible” and “The Red Scare”, character and analytical connections are made between the seventeenth century puritan system of living to the nineteen-fifties American government to the seventeenth century puritan system of living. The only character with no defined connection to “The Red Scare” is John Proctor, the most powerful character in the play, as well as the conveyer of the most significant literary message.
“ I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, and still an everlasting funeral marches around your heart. I cannot speak but I am doubted, every moment judged for lies, as though I come into a court when I come into this house!” (Proctor 54) John has many pressures upon him, the dogmatic instruction of the church, they hysteria of unnatural witch charges, and the untrusting, cold hearted spouse. John, in every aspect of his life tries to make everything flow, the secrecy of having known Abigail, the mediations of Giles, and most importantly his relationship with his wife. The relationship between John and his wife Elizabeth is unadorned, in order to make it flow, John ads salt for more flavor, but the taste of the relationship is not always agreeable. While John simply tries to support his marriage and reputation, Elizabeth is untrusting and displeased with her husband’s act of lechery.
“A fire, a fire is burning! I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face! And it is my face, and yours, Danforth! For them that quail to bring men out of ignorance, as I have quailed, and as you quail now when you know it in your black hearts that this be fraud-God damns our kind especially, and we will burn, we will burn together!”
(Proctor 120). John Proctor was the town hero, and in many ways the only voice of reason. While the church dogmatically described the evils and corruptions of society, puritans were in a state of hysteria, there were never any loving words of god, only tribulations were preached in the church. Unlike most people who were scared of being charged as “unnatural”, John was outspoken. Although he defies the church by not following an immaculate work ethic, and evades the church, no one would dare charge John as unnatural. John, although some times bluntly spoken, was upright, noble, and honest; honesty proving to be his only flaw. Originally, trying to protect his wife from absurd convictions, John admits to court of committing lechery with Abigail. When the court questions Abigail, she completely denies the account and throws the focus on the feeble minded Rebecca Nurse, who is supposedly casting her demonic sprit upon Abigail. When the chaos in the courtroom begins to accumulate, Rebecca sees no escape and charges John as the devils advocate. John losing his temper and hope in general, denounces god and the courtroom, and charges the judge as arrogant. John is immediately thrown into jail, not only on the crime of lechery, but charges of witchcraft and diabolic practices as well.
“I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang!”(Proctor 143) John proves himself purely selfless in the concluding act of “The Crucible”. Standing by his morals, John clearly shows the best of humanity. While others were chaotically in a state of mass hysteria and paranoia, John was the only one who kept his morals in the conspiracy. John refused to make his confession to witchcraft public, because it was a cowardice lie that would shame his name, and the name his sons would have to live by. While some may believe he did it out of personal pride, integrity, his reputation, John was selfless and refused to lie for his life. John confronted the noose, therefore consecrating the lives of those who died by the bravely and truthfully. He gave his life out of love, while others killed others for there own benefit of being.
John Proctor is the most important character in “The Crucible”, because he the most powerful. Judge Danforth or Abigail Williams are also powerful characters, because they have the power to take away life, therefore they can control the town by provoking fear upon the people, but fear does not promote power, only compliance. John Proctor is the most powerful character in the play because he expresses the most important literary message, humanity. John is a portrayal of humanity at its best; he gave the ultimate sacrifice for those he loved. John realized that a life without moral integrity, human dignity, and spiritual freedom wasn’t a life at all, and that by refusing to give up his personal integrity, such integrity would bring him to heaven. “You have made your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs.”(Proctor 144) John found the light in his darkest hour.

OOOOO, well ne wayz, THINGS HAVE CHANGED, i made freinds with the German exchange students who are totally awsome to talk to, Me and that Alicia Bitch are still homies (JK ANGELIA/ROBOT/c3p0), but Im diffring from some other people that once were my "First day of school freinds", Im just finnaly getting to kno people and there personalitys, and some of them are just SO SELF ABOSRBED!!!, Sure i talk about me killer smile and ass that wont quit sometimes, but I mean GET OVER YOURSELFS RIGHT? And this one bitch-will call her Zarhja, just goes and ditches us for her kewl freinds, and l8er finds out no body likes her and were her backups. And i mean I Know she it totally new money at the whole being popular thing, but she IS CONVINCED that she is the shit.
Detention- GOOD NEWS, I got 3 DAYS OF DETENTION! YES!, its fucking awsome, and its for the lamest reason EVER, I told the hall nazi that Tou shalt not give indentured servitude with out payment, cuz the bitch was trying to get me to clean up this mess THAT ERIN, that whore, spilled right in front of him. So he was like "WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO ISSUE A DETENTION FOR INSOBORDINATION?" and I of course had to be a smart ass and say, YES GOD YES PLEASE GIVE ME A DETENTION HITLER
SO yeah thats basically the gist, i didnt call him hitler.

But ne ways Ok, well today was kinda of a suck whole, becuase Like half of the kids in school have convinced themsleves that Im gay, while the other half thinks I just werid or funny. then today the teacher was all "Toca la peid a la cabeza""Touch your foot to your head", so I did with no problem, and the teacher made us do it induvidually right, So when I did it and touched my foot to my head, and then when the three football players did it, One of 'em Said "Maybe only STRAIGHT guys cant do it" Becuase i could, and Like everyother guy in class could too. So I didnt say ne thing, But i knew they where talkin about me, WHich is how it is at everyskool i go to, but trust me THEY ARE NOT FUCKIN' UP MY LAST YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL, ive already been to three High schools and this is it, So Im just gonna lay off and not bitch to them, Unless they say shit to me personally.

-How does the freshman footballer have ne room to talk and say "Heza fagg", he's the one with a hairdyed, gel job, and hes alaways fixin his hair which tells you hes a pretty boy.
